I'm sorry to hear that you've been depressed. Have you spoken to your doctor about meds? It's a real push-pull when it comes to eating at other people's homes. They need to know that it is your responsibility to keep yourself healthy and that you appreciate their efforts but you are bring your own caesar salad. If they cannot understand then maybe they need to do some praying when they are at church. They need to pray for empathy. Try a pick-me-up like buying yourself some flowers! Know that you are not alone. I hope your day gets better.

I found this abstract.

....

W. M. Roufail1 and Julian M. Ruffin1
(1) From the Department of Medicine, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N. C.

Summary In 2 cases of gluten-sensitive enteropathy, clinical recovery, partial in one and complete in the other, followed the administration of a gluten-free diet. When challenged with gluten both patients had a pronounced relapse. After the prolonged administration of tetracycline both patients have resumed a normal diet and show no effect when challenged with gluten. If these results can be confirmed in other patients, there must be a factor other than gluten in the so-called gluten-sensitive enteropathy.
Supported in part by Grants AM-5093-08 and M01-FR30 from the National Institutes of Health, U. S. Public Health Service.

...

This is very interesting. Two people who cured/silenced
CD by using long term tetracycline.

Dear Shauna, this shows that perhaps CD can be cured by
killing certain bacteria that triggers CD. Unfortunately I could not acces the entire article. It requires subscription and possibly a fee.

If anybody can post the entire article, I would be very grateful, or please post it to my email address: ceman1082@hotmail.com

Greetings,

By the way, the best lesson I ever learned about hospitality was from the book To Kill a Mockingbird. The girl in the story (Scout) has a poor schoolmate who is asked to stay for lunch, and she can't help gawking at his bad table manners.

“It was then that Calpurnia, the family servant, requested my presence in the kitchen. She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnia’s grammar became erratic. She squinted down at me and said, “There’s some folks who don’t eat like us, but you ain’t called on to contradict ‘em at the table. That boy’s yo’ comp’ny, and if he wants to eat up the tablecloth, you let him. You hear?”

Oh Shauna--what a horrible bunch of circumstances to find yourself in at once. I've had a similar experience lately of several horrendous things all coming at me together--some big, some small, and sometimes the smallest ones feeling like the worst of all of them.

You know I am not celiac myself but I do totally get what you're saying about the food difficulty. I think it's just a matter of time before more people "get it" about any tiny amount of gluten making you sick, but for now it's going to be like your "why don't people listen" post--the connection is just not there. FWIW, I agree that it's very insensitive not to allow ANYONE to bring whatever it is that they can eat, prefer to eat or need to eat to a gathering like this; and you've really done all you can by volunteering to bring a salad etc.

My youngest daughter is going to be having a birthday party soon, and one of her friends has allergies and other medical issues; I will be planning with her mom to find out if there's something I can safely bring for her or whether they're happier bringing something along themselves. It doesn't put me out either way--who wants to risk making somebody else sick? I just want my daughter's friend to be able to come and not worry about what's in the food.

Me? I think I'd send a nice gift and stay home.

Try California Baby products - they are all gluten free - and no frizz...

They have their own website.

Good Luck,

This recipe sounds divine and we have a patch of Jerusalem Artichokes at home (love those perennial, if "windy" vegetables!), so I'll be making this soon. Thanks for bringing this recipe on your blog.
